Recon 2010 & Rapier 2010

I will be running Ambush Valley at Recon 2010 this year.  Recon is sponsored by HMGS South and is down in Coca Beach Florida Holiday Inn this year.  My game is scheduled for Friday afternoon from 2-6 and will be a search and destroy type mission involving ground troops and maybe some light support.  I am thinking of allowing on-call support for the ALLIED side however.

At Rapier which is still at the Jacksonville, Fl Clarion hotel I will be running some demo games of When the Navy Walked all day Friday and Saturday night from 9pm-12pm I will be running a Rugged Adventures pulp game called The Case of the Curious Cephalopods. Both of the games at the convention will feature Martians from the Parroom Station line of miniatures as well as some other surprises.  The write ups for the games can be found here HMGS and RapierCon but I am putting them down here for reference.  I hope to see everyone there!

Recon 2010 (April 30-May 2)

Vietnam 1969

The draft has recently supplied your platoon with fresh new recruits and your firebase has been assigned a new aerorifle platoon complete with a detachment of long range reconnaissance to keep the area clear of Victor Charlie.

Rapier 20010  (June 4-6)

WTNW Against the Alien Powers

The great powers of Germany and England allied with the Sky Pirates, Atlantians, and dinosaurs and battle the alien menace of the Overlords.  Can they hold their line or will the aliens overcome the allies land Ironclads and Walkers with their Tripods and death machines?  When the Navy Walked is a strategic game of Victorian Science Fiction where the players take the reigns of massive armies and their steam powered machines.  Developed by Robert Adams.   This game will be played during Sessions One & Two.

The Case of the Curious Cephalpods
Morristown, Pennsylvania, 1923.  A classic tale of the Football Jock, the Cheerleader, American Rocket Corps MIB division, Indiana Jones and a strange artifact, the Evil Dr. Katana, and his plans for a drive-thru movie, and a group of marauding aliens hell-bent on terrorizing humanity.  A twisted retro science fiction pulp tale of unimaginable horror that can only be real in the Twilight Zone.

Modern Microarmor Challange

From the desk of Chris Stockton...

A day of micro armor in Jacksonville, FL on Saturday, May 15 starting 9:30am going until we get tired. We have 12ft x 6ft table to use.

This is a warm up to Rapier 2010, for those that are competing there. It is also the regional qualifier to the National Micro Armor Championships. Bring your modern micro armor if you wish. Micro Armor is available to use if desire.

Mick said that he will bring his 500 M1A2/M1A1s to the game for a box battle. If any one would like to get in on that game, let me know. Bring your stuff, you can be on his side if you wish or you are welcome to be on mine. Not sure if this game will happen with other priorities to game. If you wish to bring your micro armor, bring it. If not there are extra to use.  Stay for a few hours or for the entire day.

Chris is planning a unique micro armor type of game that is overlook but relavent to the international polictical climate today. A game in the Middle East with options of M1S, M1A2, Merkava IV, Challenger 2, and LeClerc MBTs.

Weekend Update

This was a good weekend although there really was no gaming to speak of I did get out WTNW:RD and I hope you all enjoy the sneak peek.  One highlight of the weekend other than the very busy Church activity schedule on Sunday was on Saturday when my daughter and I selected some pink polyhedron dice for her to play at the table with us. She used her Easter money that she found in the eggs.  I am a true gamer teaching my daughter about history and how to count using dice and gaming. She is four and enjoys rolling dice for daddy.  She says she wants to play a fairy princess or a pirate princess.  I am excited to announce that she will be featured in the next podcast albeit as a minor roll and will probably be more into the dice rolling than anything else.  Now if I can just get her to learn to count using these dice.

We also caught Clash of the Titans on the big screen and my wife watched the original for the first time here at our house.  I have it in my collection.  Since this is not really a movie review blog I will just say that I enjoyed it but it was not the same as the original.  To be truthful there were parts of that were better than the original.  The graphics really did add to the movie rather than detract it but the shorter running time detracted from some of the more interesting background and the subtraction of a flying mechanical owl reminded me of the acrid taste in my mouth left from the cut of Tom Bombadil in Lord of the Rings.  We rented 2012 and enjoyed that for an interesting piece of science fiction. I liked the ending. Next we're gearing up for some Labyrinth.

When the Navy Walked on Rorke's Drift Released!

I just released the free download for the pdf of When the Navy Walked on Rorke's Drift.  This is a free scenario so what can you lose by checking it out? Go to wargamevault and get yourself a free copy! Fans of VSF will like the steam bots and technology in the game and fans of history will enjoy the level of detail I put into the game.  I encourage all of you to go and check it out.  The core book for When the Navy Walked will be available sometime in late 2010.  Steampunk adventure awaits!

When the Navy Walked on Rorke's Drift is a free download for the upcoming table top miniatures Victorian Science Fiction game When the Navy Walked!  WTNW:RD is a scenario that uses the innovative mechanics for WTNW.  This product will appeal to fans of the VSF and alternate history genre.  This product recreates the famous battle of Rorke's Drift set in the mission station itself as the king's half brother attempts to break the thin red line and the British solders fight for their lives like rats trapped in a hole!

The core book for When the Navy Walked features an intensive full background on the development of steam powered technology and the colonization of Africa from an alternate history perspective as well as the exploration of inner earth and beyond!

This blog will be the home of new rules discussions and developments as well as the place where I will recruit people who are interested in working with me on this project in the future!  So come on and grab your steam goggles and let's dream in steam!

 As always feedback is appreciated.

Pathfinder - Against the Heroes

So Tuesday night's Pathfinder session went very well.  Before I get into this post too much I want to give a little background information for those who do not know what I am talking about.  Currently, I run three D&D games set in Forgotten Realms from 3.5.  Last Saturday the first group (the one that's been playing for one year) completed the first part of the story arch and basically completed one campaign.  I introduced elements of their task to the second group the week before.  The first group, The Chronicles of the Six (podcasted biweekly) is based in Silverymoon and is currently deep in the Jungles of Chult, having just stopped a tiefling necromancer from opening the portal to Hellgate Keep near Silverymoon.  The second group, Rise of the Fallen Star is based in Deepingdale and is dealing with the drow incursions there.  Most recently, they have helped out Highmoon by defeating an alienist cult and helping the nearby population of drow followers of Ellistrae.  Both of the proceeding games are run in 3.5 with plans for conversion to Pathfinder if I like the system.  The final group, Against the Heroes, is a mercenary (non-good) game that is set in Daggerdale.  This is my first shot at Pathfinder rules and consequently the subject of this post.

The group met and started to discuss how they would like to have their characters and after a bit they just started roleplaying.  I liked it so much I said "Ok, you guys are all sitting around in a bar and do not know each other when you start to discuss the topic of laws".  This was what they were already talking about so it worked rather well.  I continued "You are in Daggerdale in the town of Last Hope and in Empty Soul bar."  They liked that so we continued the game and I had the typical barmaid come by and introduce herself, get their orders etc (using a menu I already created to spice it up).  The entire game was impromptu and I just let things roll of my mind as a shady character and a 1/2 orc with one tusk watched from the corner, eventually offering the party a job to go collect some money owed him by a local rich farmer's kid. By the end of the game they were in the Dancing Dryad stopping a thieving kid from stealing from one of the party members (not that they cared about the party member just well it's the law.. most of them as LE).  They were all hired with the exception of the one who was robbed.  They stopped the kid and won the day for the tavern/gentlemen's club.  I was able to lay  several plot hooks down during the course of the night and felt that the game ran smoothly right from the book.

In posts to come I will be giving a more detailed analysis of Pathfinder but for now since I need to head off to work I will say that I liked almost all of the changes they made to the system.  It was much easier to run off-the-cuff without having to reference multiple books (which is why I limited the game to the Pathfinder books only) and I personally loved the static CMD and one CMB (Combat Maneuver Defense) and (Combat Maneuver Bonus) that are used for combat maneuvers such as grapple and disarm.

When asked to name six animals that live in the Arctic a seventh grader responded with "Two polar bears and Four seals". A kid in sixth grade was asked in a test what happens when a boy enters puberty. He responded with "He leaves childhood and enters adultery.

CoTS - Closing of the portal...

Last night's episode was a lot of fun but some friends were lost in the effort to stop Vortigern from opening the Hellgate Keep portal from an ancient temple of fire and water deep in the jungles of Chult and destroying the lives of thousands in Silverymoon.
